State Legislators have approved a ban on single-use plastic disposable shopping bags throughout the State of Rhode Island effective by the end of 2019
  
Barrington
January 2013
Prohibits all establishments in Barrington from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Requires paper bags to be 100% recyclable, minimum 40% PCW, and no growth fiber.
Reusable bag is defined as a bag with handles that is specially designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and is (1) made of cloth or fabric and /or (2) made of durable plastic that is at least 2.25 mil thick.
Bristol
January 2019
Prohibits all establishments in Bristol from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 4.00 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Requires paper bags to be 100% recyclable, minimum 40% PCW, and no growth fiber.
Reusable bag is defined as a bag, with handles which are stitched and not heat-fused, that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse. The bag must be made of washable cloth, other durable woven or nonwoven fabric, or durable plastic film that is recyclable plastic with a minimum thickness of four mils.
Jameston

North Kingston

Prohibits all establishments in North Kingston from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 4.00 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Recyclable Paper Bag means a paper bag that is fully recyclable overall and contains a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled content and contains no old growth fiber. The bag should display the words "Reusable" and "Recyclable" on the outside of the bag.
Reusable Bag means a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and is made primarily of cloth, other nonwoven textile or durable plastic with a minimum thickness of four (4) mils. Any straps or handles shall be stitched. If the bag does not have handles, it must be stitched at the point of carry.
Portsmouth
September 2018
Prohibits all establishments in Portsmouth from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 4.00 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
A paper bag that is fully recyclable overall and contains a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled content and contains no old growth fiber. The bag should display the words "reusable" and "recyclable" or the universal recycling logo on the outside of the bag.

Prohibits all establishments in Warren from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 4.00 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
A paper bag that is fully recyclable overall and contains a minimum of forty (40) percent post-consumer recycled content and contains no old growth fiber.
 
Reusable bag: A bag with handles which are stitched and not heat-fused, that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse. The bag must be made of washable cloth, other durable woven or nonwoven fabric, or durable plastic film that is recyclable plastic with a minimum thickness of four (4) mils.
