Under consideration by State Legislators to ban single-use plastic disposable shopping bags throughout the State of New Jersey.   
Atlantic City
August 2019 
Prohibits all establishments in Atlantic City from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Reusable bag is defined as a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple, long-term reuse, made of cloth or other machine- or hand-washable fabric or made of other durable material, including plastic that is at least 2.25 mils thick.
Avalon
June 2019 
Prohibits all establishments in Avalon from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Reusable bag is defined as a bag that is designed and manufactured to withstand repeated uses over a period of time, is machine washable or made from a material that can be cleaned and disinfected regularly, is at least 2.25 mil thick if made from plastic, has a minimum lifetime of 75 uses, and is capable of carrying a minimum of 18 pounds.
Bayonne
January 1, 2020
Prohibits all establishments in Bayonne from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Plastic straws are also banned.
Belmar
May 2019 
Prohibits all establishments in Belmar from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags.

October 2018 
Prohibits all establishments in Bradley Beach from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
"Reusable carryout bag" means a bag made of cloth or other machine washable fabric, that has handles, a non-woven polypropylene bag that has handles, or a durable polyester or polypropylene bag that has handles and is at least 2.25 mils thick, and which is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse.

Brigantine Beach
June 2019
Prohibits all establishments in Brigantine Beach from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags.

Lambertville
January 1, 2020
Prohibits all establishments in Lambertville from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Reusable bag is defined as a bag that is designed and manufactured to withstand repeated uses over a period of time, is machine washable or made from a material that can be cleaned and disinfected regularly, is at least 2.25 mil thick if made from plastic, has a minimum lifetime of 75 uses, and is capable of carrying a minimum of 18 pounds.
Plastic straws and polystryene containers are also banned.
Long Branch
January 15, 2020
Prohibits all establishments in Long Branch from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale.
There is a grace period until the end of 2020
Long Beach Township
May 2018
Prohibits all establishments in Long Beach Township from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Reusable bag is defined as a bag that is designed and manufactured to withstand repeated uses over a period of time, is machine washable or made from a material that can be cleaned and disinfected regularly, is at least 2.25 mil thick if made from plastic, has a minimum lifetime of 75 uses, and is capable of carrying a minimum of 18 pounds.
Longport
August 2015
Prohibits all establishments in Longport from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags. 
"Reusable carryout bag" means a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and is either (i) made of cloth or other machine washable fabric, (ii) made of durable plastic that is at least 2.25 mils thick, or (iii) defined as a reusable bag by the commissioner.
Maplewood
 
July 2019
Prohibits all establishments in Maplewood from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 2.25 mil. Allows paper and reusable shopping bags.

Teaneck
July 2017 
Prohibits all establishments in Teaneck from providing single-use plastic disposable shopping bags for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale. Requires plastic bags to have a minimum thickness of 3.00 mil. Allows recycled paper and reusable shopping bags. 
Recyclable Paper Bag: means a paper bag that is 100% recyclable and contains at least 40% post-consumer recycled content and displays the words "Recyclable"and made from 40% post-consumer recycled content in a visible manner on the outside of the bag.
 
"Reusable Bag" means a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and is either made from polyester, polypropylene, cotton or other durable material or plastic which is at least 3.0 mils in thickness.
Paper bag fee in Teaneck is $0.05.
